"Rebuilding my legal career with purpose" - an International Women's Day interview
For International Women’s Day, we spoke with Anna Lebedynska, a current student with the CILEX Law School, an aspiring lawyer and a former prosecutor from Ukraine who is rebuilding her legal career here in the UK with determination, resilience and deep professional purpose. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the strength women bring to the legal profession and the impact of creating accessible, flexible pathways into law.
You began your legal career in Ukraine as a prosecutor. What led you to choose the CILEX Professional Qualification after moving to the UK?
When I arrived in the UK, I had more than ten years’ experience practising law in Ukraine, but I knew that alone wasn’t enough to qualify in England and Wales. I wanted a pathway that recognised my background but also allowed me to rebuild my knowledge from the ground up.
I spent the first three years focusing on the fundamentals – strengthening my English, especially Legal English and learning about the structure of the UK legal system. I completed several introductory courses, including at the University of Cambridge’s professional and Continued Education programme, which helped me understand where I needed to grow next.
By the age of 36, I was ready. After careful research and a recommendation from a colleague, I chose the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ) and applied for the CILEX Lawyer Scholarship. The flexibility, structure and respect for prior professional experience made CILEX the most realistic and empowering pathway for me. At the time, I was working full-time in my first UK legal role while caring for my son, so the ability to balance work, study and family was essential.
What have you gained from your studies and involvement with CILEX so far?
Even though I’ve only completed the first module of the Foundation level, the experience has already been incredibly enriching. The Legal Systems module gave me a strong understanding of how law in the UK has evolved and how it operates today. I particularly enjoyed the historical context – the roots of equity, the development of human rights protection, and the role of the UK’s unwritten constitution.
This learning gave me more than legal knowledge; it gave me a renewed sense of purpose.
Academically and personally, the course has strengthened my organisation, discipline and self-motivation. Balancing online study, full-time work, and family life has made me a more resilient and independent learner – qualities that are essential for a successful career in law.
How has studying with CILEX impacted your legal career in the UK to date?
Even at this early stage, the impact has been significant. Starting the CPQ gave me clarity, dedication and confidence in my future. Being awarded a CILEX Lawyer scholarship was a particularly meaningful moment – it showed me that my background and commitment were recognised and valued.
My workplace has also been very supportive. My colleagues respect the dedication that goes into studying alongside full-time work, and that recognition has strengthen my sense of belonging within the UK legal profession.
What does being a CILEX member mean to you?
Being a CILEX member means being a part of a warm, inclusive, and genuinely supportive community. I remember attending my first event and being surprised by the scale and atmosphere – it immediately made me feel that I wasn’t just studying online; I was joining a professional family.
One moment that really stood out was during a complex court decision affecting the legal community. CILEX and CILEX Regulation responded swiftly and clearly, putting members’ concerns first. It demonstrated that CILEX is much more than awarding body – it’s a strong, trusted institution that stands with its members.
Membership has also opened my eyes to the breadth of opportunities in the profession, including potential future roles within the judiciary. Knowing these pathways exist gives me confidence and optimism for what lies ahead.
Have you used CILEX services such as myCareer or CPD resources?
Yes – and they have been incredibly valuable. I regularly explore the myCareer platform for guidance on career development and professional growth. I also make a conscious effort to maintain my CPD by attending webinars and engaging with practice-specific resources, particularly in property law.
Alongside this, wellbeing recourse have helped me grow sustainably while balancing the demands of work, study, and family life.
What advice would you give someone considering the CILEX route into a legal career?
My advice is simply: Go for it
The only thing I sometimes wish is that I had started sooner – but I also know that I wasn’t ready then. If English is not your first language, take time to strengthen it first, especially Legal English. CILEX materials are written in professional legal language, and fluency makes the learning experience much more rewarding.
If you are fluent, don’t hesitate. Start now. The syllabus is engaging, well-structured, and supported by excellent learning resources. The journey may be challenging, but it is deeply rewarding and opens doors to countless opportunities.
Finally, is there anything else you’d like to share about your CILEX journey so far?
Electronic textbooks and digital flashcards have been particularly useful in helping me study effectively. Webinars, sessions with CILEX coaches, and support from law school lecturers have also played a key role in helping me understand complex topics.
Most importantly, I’ve learned that you should never try to “swim alone in sea of new knowledge”. Ask for help. Use the support available. Balancing studying with a full-time job and family can be demanding, and there will be moments when sacrifices feel heavy – but every chapter you complete strengthens your skills, confidence and personal growth.
With patience, perseverance, and support, this journey becomes not only achievable but transformative.
