International Women’s Day spotlight: Victoria Holmes – Building a Legal Career Her Own Words
When we talk about shaping the future of the legal profession, we often highlight trailblazes who challenge conventions, breakdown barriers and carve out their own paths. This International Women’s Day we’re celebrating one such person, Victoria Holmes, Legal Apprentice at JCP Solicitors and winner of the Paralegal of the Year award at the Welsh Law Awards.
Victoria’s journey is a testament to the power of believing in your potential, trusting your instincts and embracing a route that works for you – even when it’s not the ‘traditional’ one.
Choosing Law – and Choosing Her Own Path
Like many, Victoria’s interest in law began with the criminal justice dramas she watched growing up. But as she got older, her curiosity deepened. She began to appreciate the breadth of the legal landscape and discovered a genuine passion for problem-solving - a passion that ultimately set her on a path to a legal career.
But the route she chose wasn’t the usual one.
“I didn’t feel that the university route would have suited me”, she explains. “The CILEX apprenticeship allowed me to work, study and progress all at the same time. “
Already working at JCP Solicitors when the CILEX apprenticeship scheme launched, Victoria seized the opportunity. Her decision reflects a growing shift among aspiring lawyers, particularly women, who want accessible flexible routes that allow them to build a career while gaining real-world experience.
The Power of Apprenticeships
Having already completed the Level 3 apprenticeship, Victoria is now undertaking the Level 5 apprenticeship, delivered through the University of Wales and incorporates relevant stages of the CILEX Professional Qualification, Victoria has embraced her apprenticeship wholeheartedly.
She speaks honestly about the challenges, the exams, the studying, the balancing act. But she also speaks proudly about the fulfilment it’s brought.
“The most valuable lessons I’ve learnt are the importance of putting in the work to achieve the results I want, and having faith in myself that I can progress in my career.”
Through her studies, she’s developed confidence, broadened her knowledge of conveyancing and other areas of law, and gained practical insights she uses every day in her role.
Growing in Confidence and Being Valued
For Victoria, CILEX has provided more than qualifications ,it’s provided a community and a sense of belonging and value.
“Being a CILEX member has helped me to feel valued in my role. I also feel supported by CILEX if there are any issues.”
Whether through webinars, members services or opportunities to connect with others on similar journeys, she has found encouragement at every stage.
Recognition and What Comes Next
Winning Paralegal of the Year at the Welsh Law Awards has been a standout moment, not just for Victoria but for JCP Solicitors, who were successful in several categories. It reflects her dedication, her growth and the impact she is already having as she continues to progress her legal career.
With her Level 5 qualification underway and ambitions to become a fee-earner, Victoria’s future looks bright and her journey serves as a demonstration of what can be achieved when talent, determination and opportunity come together.
A Message for Women in Law
To other women considering CILEX as their route into the Profession, Victoria’s advice is simple but powerful
“CILEX is a good way of progressing in law and working at the same time. I like that I’m able to put the theoretical knowledge I learn into action when I’m working.”
On International Women’s Day, her story embodies the very spirit of this year’s theme, Give to Gain; showing how support, opportunity and shared investment don’t just help women progress – they create a ripple effect that strengthen teams, workplaces and the wider profession. Her journey is proof that when women are empowered to grow, everyone benefits.
