Future Legal 2024: A day of insight, connections and vision for the legal profession
The 2024 Future Legal Conference was an unforgettable day filled with insight, dynamic discussions and inspiring presentations. Held in Birmingham, this was the first CILEX conference in many years, and brought together members, thought leaders and industry innovators to explore what lies ahead for the legal profession. With a packed agenda covering topics from AI to wellbeing, to equality and diversity and pathways to career progression, the conference offered something for everyone, no matter their area of interest or career stage. Here’s a look back at some of the standout sessions and moments from the day.
CILEX President, Yanthé Richardson, warmly welcomed everyone to the event, setting the tone for the day with an emphasis on collaboration, learning and growth. The packed agenda was introduced with enthusiasm and delegates were encouraged to make the most of the day.
Topics covered on the day
Keynotes:
The Fundamentals of AI
Kicking off the day’s discussions was our first keynote speaker, Uwais Iqbal, who delivered a fascinating session on the Fundamentals of AI. Uwais delved into how AI is transforming the legal landscape, making complex processes more efficient and accessible. His insights into AI’s impact on legal processes sparked lively conversation and provided attendees with a deeper understanding of how technology is shaping the future of law.
Wellness and Avoiding Burnout
After a stimulating morning, delegates returned from lunch ready for a fresh perspective on wellbeing in the workplace. Delivered by Hannah Beko, this session addressed the importance of wellness and provided practical advice on how to identify and avoid burnout. Hannah’s talk resonated with many attendees, who appreciated her insight into achieving balance and maintaining mental resilience on high-pressure environments.
Equality and Diversity in Law
Sahar Farooqi’s keynote on equality and diversity was another major highlight. He discussed the crucial role of diversity in fostering a modern, adaptable legal profession. With engaging anecdotes and valuable insights, Sahar challenged everyone to consider how they could contribute to a more inclusive workplace.
Panel discussion: Diversity and Inclusion, in conversation
In the afternoon, attendees gathered to hear from CILEX Chair, prof. Chris Bones as he moderated a panel discussion on diversity and inclusion with guests, Judith Bourne, Dr Louise Ashley and Sahar Farooqi. Together they explored best practices for fostering inclusive environments in the legal sector. This session provided a collaborative space for sharing ideas, sparking meaningful conversations and reinforcing CILEX’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive legal community.
Alongside the keynote sessions, delegates participated in a series of breakout sessions, that delved into important topics shaping the legal profession:
- 18 Months of Gen AI, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly delivered by Saurav Choopra
- An Introduction to the CILEX Professional Paralegal Register, led by Rita Leat, Leila Chaudry and Lynne Squires
- Discovering Self, Understanding Others, with Anita Arscott Brookes
- Unlocking Practice Rights, facilitated by Lynne Squires and Louise Tyrrell
- Wellness at Work, presented by Hannah Beko
The conference featured two incredibly inspiring individuals who shared their personal journeys and powerful lessons with delegates.
Delaina Benjamin captivated the audience with her story of resilience and perseverance on her path to a career in law. She spoke openly about the challenges she faced along the way – from balancing personal commitments to navigating barriers. Delaina’s message was clear; embrace the journey and appreciate each milestone, as its not only about reaching the destination but also about growing through each experience.
Charlie Fogarty MBE closed the day with an exceptionally personal story. After surviving a serious accident that changed his life, Charlie’s journey to recovery is marked with determination, a positive mindset and a refusal to give up on his dreams. His passion for football remained a constant, leading him to continue his beloved sport despite significant challenges. Recognised with an MBE, Charlie’s story was a powerful reminder to all: no matter the obstacles, perseverance, dedication and hope can lead to extraordinary achievements.
Networking and connections
From the initial reception, to the closing drinks, the conference was filled with energy and opportunities for delegates to connect. Attendees from different CILEX membership grades and roles came together, sharing ideas and forming lasting relationships within the CILEX community.
What delegates said about the day
"Great to see so many likeminded people who were able to share thoughts and experiences of the profession. The keynotes and all speakers were superb and the diversity of subjects gave something for everyone."
"I've just qualified and now have a very clear view of the path I need to follow to progress my career. CILEX should be proud of what it's delivered today and collectively determined to achieve for the profession."
"It was good to attend something that was outside of the 'training' box, e.g. dealing with issues lawyers face on a daily basis in the job."
