Apprentice Wednesday: Q&A with Demi Mackell, Paralegal Apprentice at Medway Law

Today, we’re excited to share a Q&A with Demi Mackell, a Paralegal Apprentice at Medway Law. Demi offers insights into her experience, the support she’s received, and the benefits of pursuing a legal apprenticeship with CILEX.

What made you decide that an apprenticeship was the right path for you?
An apprenticeship offered me a great balance of on-the-job experience and learning, which was appealing to me because I had already done A-Level Law and really enjoyed it. I wanted to expand my knowledge in the legal field and be able to grow in a specific area of law. An apprenticeship has allowed me to gain the expertise to flourish in the company I work for.

What kinds of tasks and responsibilities have you been handling during your apprenticeship?
I have taken on a range of legal tasks during my apprenticeship so far, such as administrative duties, legal research, managing my own case files, and liaising with numerous clients.

How are you going to be assessed in your apprenticeship, and how do you feel about it?
I will be assessed by an End Point Assessment (EPA). I prefer this method over traditional exams, as they can sometimes be quite daunting! The EPA consists of a portfolio, presentation, and professional discussion, which CILEX prepare you for throughout your apprenticeship to ensure you have the right skills to achieve the best results.

How has your employer supported you throughout your apprenticeship?
My employer has been hugely supportive during my apprenticeship. I have a designated supervisor within the business, who attends my frequent progress reviews with CILEX, so that they are also in the loop with how I am progressing. My supervisor is also on hand to help with CILEX work should I need it, and holds monthly coaching sessions where I can talk about any gaps in knowledge I may have.

What kind of support have you received from CILEX Law School?
CLS offers unwavering support in the form of a learning and development supervisor (LDA), who is there to assist in any way they can. The LDA’s are extremely helpful in your studies, as they offer catch-up calls, progress review meetings, and practice professional discussions to help prepare you for your EPA.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
The best thing about my apprenticeship is the high levels of support you receive and working with other like-minded students, who are on the same pathway. It is important to network with other people on your CILEX course, as they can benefit you in many ways and you can learn a lot from them.

What are the most important skills you've developed so far?
CILEX has greatly improved my oral communication skills. I was not a fan of speaking in front of a group or class before, but with the help of my LDA and partaking in various oral communication skills sessions, this has aided me in growing my confidence and ability to speak in front of others.

What would you say to someone thinking about starting an apprenticeship?
I would say go for it! It is a great way to get into the law sector, without having to go down traditional routes to get there. You are allowed designated study days away from work, and this makes the learning side more manageable and allows you to organise your time. You can gain valuable work experience and apply the theory from your learning to real-life situations.
