From Ambition to Action: How Darcy Gee is Building a Legal Career with CILEX

Meet Darcy Gee – Paralegal at Family Law Partners and a current CPQ student. At just 21, Darcy made the bold decision to start her legal career without going to university, choosing instead a more practical and flexible route through CILEX. Here’s how that decision is shaping her future.

Why did you choose to study with CILEX, and how old were you when you started?

I’m currently studying the CPQ Foundation Stage. I chose this qualification because I didn’t go to university and wanted a practical and accessible route into the legal profession. The CPQ pathway gives me the flexibility and structured learning I need to develop both my legal knowledge and practical skills. I started my CILEX journey at 21, and it felt like the most effective way to qualify and progress in my legal career.

What skills and knowledge have you gained through your studies and involvement with CILEX?

CILEX has helped me build a strong legal foundation. I’ve gained in-depth knowledge across different areas of law, and developed key skills like legal research, analysis, and professional ethics. The CPQ Foundation Stage has also improved my time management as I juggle study, work, and personal commitments. I’ve grown more confident in applying my learning to real-world legal situations, which is incredibly rewarding.

How has the CILEX qualification helped your career?

It’s been instrumental. The CPQ has given me the legal grounding I need while allowing me to develop critical skills like client care and legal research. The flexibility of the programme means I can gain work experience and learn at the same time. Before I found CILEX, I thought going to university was the only way to become a lawyer. Now I know there’s a different path—one that’s just as credible and more accessible.

What does being a CILEX member mean to you?

Being a CILEX member means being part of a respected, supportive community that values legal excellence. I have access to resources, networking opportunities, and ongoing professional development, which all support my growth in the profession. I’m proud to be qualifying through a route that combines study with practical experience—it’s a powerful combination that builds both knowledge and confidence.

Have you used additional CILEX services like myCareer or CPD?

Yes, I’ve used both and found them incredibly helpful. The myCareer platform has guided me through career planning and development, helping me understand my options and set clear goals. The CILEX CPD resources have helped me stay current and continue learning beyond the classroom. These tools have been key in keeping me focused and motivated.

What would you say to someone considering the CILEX route into law?

Go for it! CILEX offers a practical, flexible, and cost-effective route into the legal profession. It allows you to work while you study and apply your knowledge as you go. Whether you’re just starting or already working in law, the CPQ pathway supports real career progression. It’s perfect for anyone who wants a more accessible route to becoming a legal professional—without the traditional law degree.

Any final thoughts?

My experience with the CILEX programme has been overwhelmingly positive. I love that it provides a clear and structured pathway into law without needing to go to university. The support from CILEX—especially through myCareer and CPD—has helped me stay on track and grow with confidence. I’m proud to be on this journey and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about a legal career.
