# From Officer Junior to Senior Partner: Meet Claire Parrott, the newest member of the CILEX Professional Board

***![Claire Parrott (1)](https://blog.cilex.org.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/Claire%20Parrott%20(1).jpeg?width=169&height=291&name=Claire%20Parrott%20(1).jpeg)After almost 3 decades in criminal defence, Claire has built a distinguished legal career, becoming the first female Managing Partner and the first CILEX-qualified Managing Partner at Tuckers Solicitors. Now, as the newest member of the CILEX Professional Board, she is determined to help shape the future of the profession and inspire others to believe that a career in law is within their reach.***

When Claire looks back on her career, from leaving home at 16 to becoming a Senior Partner at a national law firm, it’s a journey she could never have imagined at the beginning.

A Fellow of CILEX and Chartered Legal Executive Advocate specialising in criminal proceedings, Claire is Managing Partner for the North at Tuckers Solicitors, where she oversees legal teams across the North of England while contributing to the firm’s national strategy, governance and business development.

But alongside her professional achievements, it’s her personal experience of finding a route into law, and her determination to ensure others have the same opportunities, that continue to drive her.

Now joining the CILEX Professional Board, Claire hopes to use her experience to champion CILEX professionals, challenge outdated perceptions of alternative qualification routes and help future generations see a place for themselves in the legal profession.

**Discovering a passion for criminal defence**

Claire’s original ambition was to join the police and become a detective. Growing up, she experienced challenges that gave her a strong sense of fairness and justice, although becoming a lawyer was not something she initially considered a realistic possibility.

“I didn’t think it was a career that was open to someone like me.” She explains.

After volunteering and undertaking work experience with the police, Claire was encouraged to gain legal experience and qualifications to develop her understanding of the criminal justice system. That advice would change the direction of her life.

She began working as an office junior at a criminal defence firm in Manchester, where she was given an insight into a profession she had never previously imagined herself entering.

The late Keith Dyson, of Keith Dyson Solicitors, played a particularly important role in her early career, recognising her potential and encouraging her to pursue opportunities in law.

“Seeing lawyers in action, attending court, working on cases and understanding the impact legal professionals could have on people’s lives completely fascinated me,” says Claire. “I caught a glimpse of a profession that I had never really considered, and I was gripped from that moment on.”

As she gained experience, Claire developed a deeper understanding of the importance of criminal defence. She discovered that cases were often far more complex than they first appeared, with competing accounts, evidence that needed to be scrutinised and individuals whose circumstances could not be understood through assumptions alone.

She became passionate about the role defence lawyers play in protecting people’s rights, challenging assumptions and ensuring everyone receives a fair hearing.

Nearly three decades later, that commitment remains at the heart of her work.

**Finding a route that worked around real life**

Claire’s journey into law was not a traditional one. After leaving home at 16, she became financially independent and had to balance the realities of supporting herself with her ambitious future.

Although she originally pursued A Levels, continuing her education alongside financial responsibilities proved increasingly difficult.

Having progressed through roles including receptionist, personal assistant and legal support, Claire discovered CILEX with encouragement from her employer. It offered a route that allowed her to continue working, gain practical experience and study towards a professional qualification.

“What attracted me most was that it valued practical experience alongside academic achievement,” she explains. “It provided a genuine pathway into the profession for people who may not have followed a traditional route, whilst maintaining high professional standards and expectations.”

Claire studies in the evenings and funded her qualifications herself. During that time, she also got married and had two children, balancing family life with the demands of work and study.

“Looking back, I’m not quite sure how I managed it.”

Her experience is a powerful example of how flexible routes into law can make professional development possible for people whose circumstances might otherwise present barriers to qualifications.

Claire qualified as a Fellow of CILEX in 2008, subsequently developing her advocacy practice and gaining duty accreditation.

For her, qualifying was about much more than achieving a professional milestone. It opened doors she had not previously believed were available to her.

“It showed me that where you start in life does not determine where you finish.”

**Building a career and breaking new ground**

Claire joined Tuckers Solicitors in 2002 and has spent much of her career developing her expertise in criminal defence, from police station representation to Magistrates’ Court proceedings to serious and complex Crown Court cases.

Her progression from office junior to supervisor, and ultimately Managing Partner, reflects years of professional development, practical experience and determination.

Becoming the firm’s first female Managing Partner and its first CILEX-qualified Managing Partner is an achievement of which she is particularly proud.

“Not because of the title itself, but because of what it represents,” she explains. “I hope it demonstrates that there are many different routes into the legal profession and that talent, commitment and determination can take you further than you ever imagined.”

Leadership has also given Claire the opportunity to support others in building their own careers. Helping colleagues develop their confidence, gain qualifications and achieve their ambitions is one of the most rewarding aspects of her role.

She believes that the profession is strongest when it recognises talent wherever it is found and creates opportunities for people with different experiences and backgrounds to succeed.

That belief is closely connected to her own CILEX journey and the importance she places on social mobility and widening participation.

“Throughout my career I have been proud to belong to an organisation that represents talent and potential wherever it’s found.”

**Why the CILEX Professional Board matters**

Claire’s appointment to the CILEX Professional Board represents another important milestone in her career, but she sees the opportunity as much more than a personal achievement.

“CILEX has played a significant role in my own career and professional development, so joining the Professional Board felt like an opportunity to give something back.”

"I want to help shape the future of the profession, support members and contribute to an organisation that has opened doors for so many talented individuals.

Claire brings a combination of frontline legal experience, senior leadership and first-hand understanding of the CILEX qualification route.

Having progressed through the different levels of a legal practice, she understands the challenges and opportunities facing professionals at different stages of their careers. Within her own team, she works alongside people who have entered law through a variety of routes, including CILEX, apprenticeships, traditional solicitor pathways and the Solicitor Qualifying Examination (SQE).

She believes this breadth of experience will help her contribute a valuable perspective to the Board’s work.

“Personally, it is a tremendous privilege. When I think about my journey. From leaving home at 16 and starting as an office junior to becoming a Senior Partner and now a Professional Board member for an organisation that enabled me to have my career, I could never have dreamt it.”

But what matters most to Claire, is the opportunity to influence what comes next.

“It is wonderful to help people achieve their dreams, but I am equally passionate about helping those who have never felt able to dream in the first place.”

She hopes that sharing her story will help others recognise that a legal career is possible even if they don’t see themselves reflected in traditional representations of the profession.

“If my journey can help someone realise there is a place for them in law, then that would be one of the most meaningful contributions I could make.”

**Championing the value of the profession**

One of the biggest opportunities Claire sees for CILEX is continuing to improve understanding of the skills, qualifications and experience that CILEX professionals bring to the legal sector.

While she recognises the progress made in recent years, she believes there is still work to do to challenge assumptions that traditional qualification routes are inherently superior.

“In my experience, that perception often overlooks the depth of practical experience, technical expertise and professional competence that CILEX lawyers bring to the profession.”

She is also conscious of the uncertainty experienced by members following the *Mazur* decision, which affected perceptions of CILEX practitioners and raised concerns about the scope of their work.

For Claire, rebuilding understanding and confidence means continuing to engage with employers, stakeholders and the wider profession, while ensuring members receive recognition for their qualifications, skills and professional contributions.

“The more visibility there is of successful CILEX practitioners in leadership, advocacy and partnership roles, the more we can demonstrate that excellence in law is not defined by how you qualified, but by your ability, professionalism and contribution to the profession.”

She is looking forward to engaging with members, listening to their experiences and working collaboratively with other Board members to help shape the future of the profession.

Above all, she wants aspiring legal professionals to feel that their opportunities are determined by their ability and ambition, rather than assumptions about their background or route into law.

![EXAMPLE](https://blog.cilex.org.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/EXAMPLE.png?width=221&height=276&name=EXAMPLE.png)**The importance of looking beyond assumptions**

Claire’s commitment to fairness extends beyond her support for alternative qualification routes. It is also central to her work in criminal defence.

One of the questions criminal defence lawyers are frequently asked is: “How can you defend those people?”

For Claire, the question highlights the importance of looking beyond the assumptions and recognising the human story behind every case.

“Anyone can find themselves caught up in the criminal justice system,” she explains. “Sometimes it is a split-second decision with life-changing consequences. Sometimes it is poor mental health, addiction, trauma or circumstances outside of a person’s control.”

Her work has reinforced the importance of treating people with dignity, understanding their circumstances and ensuring everyone has access to fair representation.

It has also taught her a lesson she carries into her leadership and her approach to supporting colleagues: never make assumptions about people or what they are capable of achieving.

**Her advice to future CILEX Professionals: Own your story**

When asked what advice she would give someone just beginning their CILEX journey, Claire’s message is simple: believe in yourself, even when others may not yet recognise your potential.

“There will always be moments when you question whether you are good enough, experienced enough, or capable enough. Don’t let those doubts define you.”

She encourages aspiring professionals to take opportunities, ask questions, seek mentors and keep moving forward, even when the journey feels challenging.

“Most importantly, never allow background to dictate your future. Some of the most successful people in the profession started from places where nobody would have expected them to succeed.”

This advice is shaped by her own experience. For many years, Claire viewed aspects of her past as obstacles she needed to overcome. With time, she came to understand how those experiences had helped shape her resilience, empathy and determination.

“Your background is not something that limits you; it is part of what makes you unique.”

Her final message is one she hopes will resonate with anyone who has ever questioned whether they belong in the legal profession.

“For a long time, I thought I had succeeded despite my story. With hindsight, I realise I succeeded because of it.”

As Claire begins her work on the CILEX Professional Board, that message captures what she hopes to champion: a profession that recognises potential, values different routes to success and gives people the confidence to pursue ambitions they may never previously have thought possible.
