Carving Her Own Path: Angel's Journey into Law as a CILEX Apprentice

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women across all industries, including law—a profession that is continuously evolving to become more inclusive. As a young woman in law, Angel Bennett's journey has been shaped by resilience, ambition, and a drive to break barriers. Choosing a CILEX apprenticeship over the traditional university route allowed her to forge her own path, and today, she stands proud of the progress she's made.

AngelFor many, the traditional university route is seen as the standard pathway into law. But for me, choosing a legal apprenticeship through CILEX was the best decision I could have made—one that has shaped my career in ways I never imagined.

Taking an Alternative Route

When I first considered my future in law, I had the grades to pursue a university degree. But something about the apprenticeship route stood out to me. It was an opportunity to gain real-world experience, earn while I learn, and build practical legal skills from the start. So, rather than continuing into Year 13, I made the bold decision to leave sixth form early and take the apprenticeship route.

At the time, it felt like a leap into the unknown. I was entering a professional world where most people were older and more experienced than me. I often questioned whether I was good enough, whether I would be taken seriously and whether I had made the right choice. But as I progressed, I realised that my early start was an advantage—it gave me a head start in developing key skills and industry knowledge.

Growing in Confidence & Responsibility

Since starting my CILEX Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship, I have had the chance to work in real estate law, assisting with legal matters, handling post-completion tasks, and gaining hands-on experience that a classroom alone could never provide.

Each challenge has helped me grow. I’ve learned to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, manage legal documentation efficiently, and work under pressure to meet deadlines. Over time, I’ve taken on more responsibilities, moving from supporting cases to handling aspects of legal matters independently.

Speaking Up & Giving Back

One of the most rewarding parts of my journey has been the chance to support and inspire others. I’ve been fortunate to share my experiences at events like CILEX Connect & Grow Cardiff and Growing Ambitions, where I spoke about my apprenticeship journey and career aspirations.

I've also taken an active role in hosting and attending industry events, including:

- Hosting an Apprentice Networking Breakfast at my firm, connecting apprentices and fostering career discussions
  • - Volunteering with Working Wardrobe, helping individuals access professional attire for interviews
  • - Supporting 2B Enterprising Children's Workshops, encouraging young people to develop entrepreneurial and career-focused skills
  • - Attending the Social Value in Business Conference, exploring how businesses can make meaningful social contributions
  • - Engaging with Chambers Wales, networking with legal professionals and business leaders

I’m very passionate about diversity and accessibility in the legal profession. I believe it’s important to break down barriers so that more people—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds—can see a future for themselves in law.

Looking Ahead

My journey is still unfolding at only 18, but my goal is clear: to qualify as a solicitor while continuing to grow and make an impact. I want to show others that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to success in law.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I reflect on the power of resilience, ambition, and taking ownership of our own paths. To any young woman considering a career in law—whether through university, an apprenticeship, or another route—know that your journey is valid, and your success is yours to define.
