Redefining success: One CILEX member's legal journey begins at 17

ShayneFor many, a legal career starts with years at university. But for this ambitious CILEX member, the journey took a different and deeply rewarding route - one that allowed him to enter the profession early, gain practical experience and pursue his passion for private client law, all without the burden of student debt.

Inspired by law from a young age

From a young age, Shayne Thomas knew where he belonged, "I decided I wanted to work in law because I found it really interesting. I loved the idea of being in a job where I could keep learning, with vast opportunities for career progression, I aspire to become a law firm partner one day."

His early inspiration came from watching legal drama's on TV - picturing himself in those roles. Working with the police, in a professional capacity, further cemented Shayne's interest in the justice system, providing a unique blend of experiences that complemented his career. And now, remarkable, Shayne is living the vision he had as a young boy.

Gaining experience in Private Client Law

Shayne began his journey in the private client department of a local law firm. Most recently he's been honing his skills and expertise at Hutchinson Thomas, where his confidence and capability continue to grow.

"I've recently started drafting more complex documents independently, including discretionary trust wills and other important instruments. I particularly enjoy the Court of Protection work - handling deputyship matters is something I find really rewarding."  He has even been appointed as an attorney for an individual's property, financial affairs and health and welfare - as well as executor in a will, "That's something I probably wouldn't have done had I not worked in law and gained valuable experience."

Choosing the CILEX route at 17

Instead of choosing a traditional university pathway, Shayne took a bold step and enrolled with CILEX at just 17 years old.

"The university route didn't feel right for me. I wanted to start working, to get real experience - so I joined a local law firm and began studying for my CILEX Level 3 qualification at the same time."  Shayne is continuing his journey, having now progressed onto the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), combining work and study in a way that fits around his goals and lifestyle perfectly.

Learning legal and life skills

The CILEX qualification hasn't just helped Shayne gain knowledge in wills, probate and lasting powers of attorney - it's also helped him develop critical workplace skills like organisation, communication and responsibility. "My studies with CILEX have given me knowledge and skills which I'll carry through my entire legal career."  Shayne also continues to make use of tools such as myCareer and CPD resources, finding the helpful for his ongoing learning and career development.

CILEX: A pathway that opens doors

"Choosing the CILEX route changed my life - it gave me access to a legal career that may have otherwise been out of reach. Being a CILEX member means a lot to me. It's a privilege." Shayne's advise to anyone considering CILEX is "Do It! It's a fantastic way to work in law without the need to go to university and build up lots of student debt. Earn while you learn - it's a no brainer."

Looking ahead

With a strong foundation, real-world experience and the support of the CILEX community behind him, Shayne's legal career is already thriving - and he's only just getting started.

His story is a shining example of how determination, smart choices and alternative pathways can lead to real success in the legal profession.
