From CILEX to Grade A Associate: How Minster Law Supported Lee Elmore’s Personal Injury Career

An interview with Senior Associate, Lee Elmore

For many aspiring legal professionals, the journey into law is not always linear. For Lee Elmore, now a Grade A Associate at Minster Law, the CILEX route offered the flexibility, recognition and progression he needed to build a fulfilling career in personal injury law.
We spoke to Lee about his path into the profession, his experience at Minster Law and his advice for fellow CILEX members and students.

Lee’s Journey into Law

Q: Can you tell us a bit about Minster Law and your journey into the legal profession? What led you to choose the CILEX route?
Lee: I joined Minster Law in March 2009 from a defendant background with a major motor insurer, where I had been handling the most complex and high-value cases. Over time, I became increasingly aware of the insurance industry’s approach to seriously injured claimants. I realised I would feel far more motivated representing injured people rather than defending on behalf of insurers.

As I didn’t have a law degree, the CILEX route immediately appealed. It allowed me to study while working—applying my growing legal knowledge day-to-day, while also using my practical experience to support my studies.

Why Lee Chose Minster Law

Q: What initially attracted you to Minster Law as a place to build your career?
Lee: When I joined in 2009, several of my colleagues had already made the move for similar reasons. Although the office wasn’t particularly local for me, Minster Law had—and still has—a strong reputation for handling high-value and complex personal injury claims fairly and efficiently. It felt like the obvious next step.

Life at Minster Law

Q: What does an average day look like for you?
Lee: At Minster Law, we are committed to achieving the best possible results for every client we represent. As a result, all associates, including myself, manage only a small number of very complex, high‑value cases, which means I spend a significant amount of time each day directly supporting my clients.

Working as a hub, my paralegal, assistant fee earner and I deal with everything from rehabilitation queries to court-related matters. No two days are the same. Although my team and I work flexibly, with the option to work remotely from home or in the office, our communication remains extremely close and collaborative, ensuring a seamless service for our clients.

Q: How would you describe the culture at Minster Law?
Lee: It’s positive and open. People feel able to speak out about issues affecting them, our clients, or the business. Communication from senior leadership is strong, and I feel genuinely supported by my immediate manager.

Q: How has the firm supported your development over the years?
Lee: Minster funded my studies through the CILEX qualification process, and I achieved Fellowship in 2019. I’ve always felt professionally supported, and the firm recently funded me to sit the Solicitor Qualifying Exam, as an addition to hold alongside my CILEX qualification and membership.

Q: Is there a moment that best reflects Minster’s culture for you?
Lee: Absolutely. After the Mazur ruling, Minster immediately reached out to affected colleagues with reassurance and a firm commitment to supporting us. The business introduced additional measures to ensure CILEX colleagues were protected and regularly updated, allowing us to continue delivering high-quality service to clients and partners.

Growth and Future Ambitions

Q: How has Minster helped shape your ambitions for the future?
Lee: Minster has played a huge role in my growth—supporting my qualification, my internal development and recognising my dedication to the business. I was promoted to Senior Associate in September 2024, which reflects that ongoing support and belief in my abilities.

A Message for Future Colleagues

Q: Is Minster Law a great place for CILEX members to build a career?
Lee: Absolutely. The firm has long had a robust supervision and oversight framework—very much aligned with what the Mazur judgment eventually required. CILEX colleagues are valued here, and there are no barriers to the type of work they can undertake if they have the appropriate experience.

Q: What would you say to CILEX members or students considering a role at Minster?
Lee: Do it. The support is already strong, and the measures introduced since the ruling ensure you will feel protected, valued and empowered.

Management Perspective

“At Minster Law, we have always recognised the immense value that CILEX professionals bring to our business. Their practical experience, resilience and client-focused mindset help deliver exceptional legal service to our clients and partners. During times of change, including the recent Mazur ruling, our priority has been to stand firmly with our CILEX colleagues, provide clarity and reassurance, and reaffirm our commitment to their careers. We proudly champion alternative pathways into the profession, with our CILEX colleagues making a meaningful contribution to our culture and outcomes that matter every day.”
