On Saturday 19 October, CILEX hosted the 2024 Graduation and Admissions Ceremony, a remarkable day that celebrated the journey of our members, newly qualified Chartered Legal Executives, and those earning Advocacy or Practice Rights. With each story of dedication, sacrifice, and success, we were reminded of the incredible diversity and resilience within our community.
The event brought together graduates, families, friends, and the CILEX Professional Board, honouring not only the achievements but also the unique paths each of our members has taken. The day was filled with pride, laughter, and inspiration, especially as our guest speaker, Trevor Stirling, Senior Partner and Head of Moore Barlow’s Major Trauma Service, shared words of wisdom that resonated with everyone in the room.
Our graduates’ words speak volumes about the challenges and triumphs they’ve experienced on their CILEX journey:
Maryam Quddusi captured the emotion of the day beautifully, sharing, "The moment that felt such a long distance away a few years ago and seemed like an impossible task to achieve... my heart felt so full."
Rebecca Roe shared her pride after years of resilience, "I DID IT 👩🏽🎓🎓... Never give up on your dreams, even if you think you’re at rock bottom. Keep going. Everything works out in the end, and when it does, make the most of it!💃🏽."
Jo Collinson reflected on the family support that made her journey possible: “Two children and a lot of hard work later, I finally did it! I really couldn't have done it without the support of my family... To see my two boys cheering me on from the crowd is what it's all about. For you, my boys, always.”
Chloe Roberts, who returned to studies eight years after earning a degree, celebrated her resilience, saying, “The road to it hasn’t been easy and there’s been a lot of barriers, but I’m incredibly proud of myself for being resilient and not giving up... Next step in the plan - becoming a CILEX Lawyer 🤓.”
Louise Delavaloire emphasized the work-life balance she maintained throughout her studies, stating, “Reflecting on a whirlwind weekend attending the 2024 CILEX graduation ceremony... five years of navigating working full time, parenthood, family life, making sacrifices and navigating life’s curveballs, all while studying.”
The ceremony wasn’t just a time to celebrate the achievements of our members; it was also a reminder of the support systems that have played a crucial role along the way. Friends, family members, mentors, and colleagues have been there through every late-night study session, exam, and big milestone. As Melanie Moran shared, “Seeing everyone graduate and celebrate with their family and friends was a memory I will take away with me forever… Somehow, this one meant so much more.” Melanie’s words capture the special bond our members share with their loved ones, and we are grateful for everyone who has supported our members’ dreams.
The day’s highlight was hearing from Trevor Sterling, whose journey in law is as remarkable as it is inspiring. As Senior Partner and Head of Moore Barlow’s award-winning Major Trauma Service, Trevor spoke about resilience, empathy, and the deep satisfaction that comes from helping others through legal service. His message encouraged graduates to face challenges head-on, reminding them of the positive impact they can make in the lives of others.
The CILEX Graduation and Admissions Ceremony 2024 was a testament to the power of determination, support, and ambition. For our graduating members, it marked the beginning of an exciting journey within the CILEX family. As Alena Anna Portella put it, “The sacrifices and late nights were many, and I am immensely grateful for my family and friends for supporting me and believing in me along the way. I hope I've made them proud.”
This day was just the start, with many new paths ahead and countless opportunities waiting for our members to seize. As they step into their roles, we know they will carry the lessons and values they’ve learned with them, shaping the future of the legal profession.
