Celebrating Pro Bono Excellence: How the CILEX Community is Expanding Access to Justice

The publication of the 2026 Pro Bono Recognition List of England & Wales marks a significant moment for the legal profession.

This year, a record 5,550 lawyers have been recognised for contributing 25 hours or more of pro bono legal support over the past year—an extraordinary demonstration of the profession’s collective commitment to ensuring access to justice.

Behind that number are thousands of individual acts of generosity: legal professionals giving their time, expertise and care to support people and communities who might otherwise go without.

And among them, the CILEX community continues to play a vital and growing role.

A profession united by purpose

The Recognition List, now in its third year, reflects a legal sector working together to support those most in need.

From solicitors and barristers to chartered legal executives and, for the first time, patent and trade mark attorneys, the List highlights the breadth of professionals contributing to pro bono across England and Wales.

It is also a sign of growing momentum. Entries have increased by 16% since 2025, and nearly 50% since the List launched in 2024—a powerful indication that pro bono remains a core part of the profession’s identity.

As Patron of the initiative, the Lady Chief Justice, Baroness Carr, emphasised the importance of this work, noting that while pro bono is not a substitute for legal aid, it remains a vital part of the justice system—one that the judiciary sees making a real difference every day.

The CILEX contribution

This year’s List includes 136 Chartered Legal Executives, recognising the meaningful contribution CILEX members make to pro bono efforts across the country.

CILEX professionals are uniquely positioned within the legal landscape—often embedded within their communities, offering practical, accessible legal support to individuals and organisations alike.

CILEX President Sarah Fowler noted:

“CILEX is delighted to join in recognising the dedication of those who contribute to pro bono work across the legal profession. Your generosity and expertise help ensure access to justice for those who need it most.”

This recognition reinforces what many already see in practice: that CILEX members are at the forefront of delivering legal services that are both accessible and impactful.

Pro bono in action: Ian Hunt’s story

For Ian Hunt, a CILEX Fellow at East Devon Law LLP, pro bono isn’t an occasional commitment—it’s a long-standing part of his professional life.

Recognised for the second consecutive year on the Pro Bono Recognition List, Ian has spent more than 14 years helping to deliver free legal advice to those who need it most.

Through his firm’s work with local organisations—including hospices, Age UK groups and the Ottery Help Scheme—Ian has supported countless individuals who may otherwise have had nowhere to turn.

But his impact extends beyond local clinics.

Ian and his firm also work alongside national charities such as Cancer Research UK, Mencap and the National Autistic Society, helping families navigate complex legal issues—particularly when planning for the future of children with disabilities.

At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful motivation:

“There’s great satisfaction in helping people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to advice,” Ian says. “Giving back is vital to my work as a CILEX member, and I encourage others to find opportunities to support their communities.”

Ian’s story highlights the real, human impact of pro bono work—and the difference that consistent, community-focused support can make over time.

Why pro bono still matters

While pro bono cannot replace a properly funded legal aid system, it plays a crucial role in filling gaps—providing immediate, practical support to those navigating complex legal challenges without the means to pay.

From reuniting families to securing education for children with additional needs, the stories behind the Recognition List show just how transformative this support can be.

For CILEX members, pro bono is also an extension of a wider mission: to make the legal profession more accessible, inclusive and representative of the communities it serves.

A moment to recognise—and to inspire

The 2026 Pro Bono Recognition List is not just a celebration of what has already been achieved. It is also a call to continue.

As more legal professionals step forward to contribute their time and expertise, the collective impact grows—strengthening access to justice across England and Wales.

To everyone recognised this year, including the many within the CILEX community: thank you. Your work is making a meaningful difference.

And for those considering getting involved, Ian’s message is clear—there is always an opportunity to give back.
