Balancing Study and Practice: Benjamin O’Neill’s Path into Employment Law with CILEX

Ben ONeill HeadshotFor Benjamin O’Neill, the decision to pursue a legal career didn’t mean following a traditional path. Already working in the field as an Employment Law Assistant at Bell Taylor, Benjamin chose the CILEX CPQ Foundation to develop his legal skills in a way that aligned with his work — and ambitions.

A Practical Start to a Legal Career

Benjamin began his CILEX journey at the age of 23, opting for a route that would allow him to build his legal expertise alongside valuable workplace experience.

“I wanted a way to strengthen my legal knowledge while staying grounded in the practical work I was already doing,” he says. “CILEX offered exactly that.”

The CPQ Foundation stage has already had a noticeable impact on his understanding and performance. Studying contract law and legal research has given him the confidence to interpret legislation and advise clients with greater clarity.

“Employment contracts are a big part of my day-to-day role,” Benjamin explains. “Studying contract law helped me understand how contracts are formed and when they’re valid — knowledge I apply all the time.”

Learning That Makes a Difference

CILEX has not only boosted Benjamin’s knowledge but has also enhanced his credibility in the workplace. Being able to immediately apply what he learns has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

“I’m more confident when drafting documents, advising clients, and navigating complex employment issues,” he says. “CILEX has made a real difference to how I work.”

For Benjamin, the benefit of learning in context is clear. By continuing to study while working, he’s gaining deeper insight into the legal framework of employment law and positioning himself for future progression — with a clear pathway toward becoming a qualified lawyer.

What CILEX Membership Means to Him

“Being a CILEX member means I’m working towards qualification in a way that supports and reflects my day-to-day work,” says Benjamin. “It’s a credible, career-focused route into the profession that matches how I want to grow.”

Though he hasn’t yet used CILEX’s additional resources like myCareer or CPD tools, Benjamin is confident in the value of the qualification alone — and its ability to support aspiring legal professionals.

Advice to Future Legal Professionals

Having experienced both university and the CILEX route, Benjamin is clear in his recommendation for others:

“CILEX is a great route if you want to build legal knowledge and get real experience at the same time. It’s challenging, but hugely rewarding. You can see your effort paying off directly in your role.”
