A New Chapter: How Anne Found her Calling in Law Through CILEX

Anne For Anne, the journey into law didn't follow a conventional path. Inspired by a life-changing event and driven by a deep desire to make a meaningful impact, she began her legal studies later in life - but has since proven that it's never too later to follow your passion.

Starting again at 45: a bold first step

Anne began her legal journey at the age of 45, enrolling on the CILEX legacy programme before moving across to the CPQ (CILEX Professional Qualification) through a bridging package. Her initial goal was to qualify as a paralegal and see how far she could progress. As it turns out, she had the aptitude, passion and drive to go further.

"I didn't think the conventional route into law was possible for me," Anne says. "CILEX opened a door I thought had long been closed."

Skills for life: learning to think and work like a lawyer

Through her studies, Anne has gained more than just legal knowledge - she's developed the analytical mindset essential to the profession. "I've learned to think and write like a lawyer," she explains. "I understand how to approach questions, interpret statutes and case law and apply the law correctly to real-world situations."

Anne also praises CILEX's forward-thinking curriculum: "One thing CILEX does cleverly is to keep pace with changes in the legal field. Law is taught as something alive, something that shapes and responds to the world we live in."

Turning studies into action: A role at the Child Law Advice Service (CLAS)

Anne's CILEX qualification has opened up real opportunities. Including joining CLAS (Child Law Advice Service, part of Coram Children's Legal Centre) as a volunteer, she now works as a legal advisor - something she says wouldn't have been possible without CILEX.

"I owe my current position to the path I chose with CILEX. It gave me the tools and confidence to step into the profession and make a difference."

Community, support and growth: The CILEX experience

To Anne, being a CILEX member means being part of a "bright, driven, principled group"  of like-minded individuals.  "We come from all walks of life, and I love that. The diversity within the CILEX community has been both inspiring and encouraging."

She also took full advantage of the extra support available. "The 'So You Think You Know...' CPD modules were excellent. They really enriched my understanding and made learning enjoyable."

Advice for aspiring legal professionals

Anne encourages anyone considering a legal career through CILEX to dive in. "It's a fantastic way to join the legal profession, especially if the traditional route doesn't suit you. There's a lot of work - but help is always there. You're never alone, and you're part of a supportive, generous community."

A grateful perspective

Looking back, Anne is deeply thankful for the existence of the CILEX route. "I thought I'd missed my chance. But CILEX showed me I hadn't. I've learned just as much - if not more - than I would have though other routes, and I feel better prepared for the real demands of legal practice thanks to the practical modules such as legal research and accounting."

Her story is a powerful reminder that determination, adaptability and the right support system can transform a life and a career - no matter when the journey begins.
